An Historic Event as Rosenior Shatters Boundaries

"Liam Rosenior is a top manager that understands the game intimately, and that's what matters most.

"But, as Chelsea's pioneering black footballer, I would be lying if I said this appointment does not affect me."

These were the words expressed by the former Chelsea winger, who earned his historic debut for Chelsea's senior side off the bench back in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea named RC Strasbourg manager Rosenior, 41, as their next manager after the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are within the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo that also controls Chelsea.

There have been only twelve of African or Caribbean heritage managers – not including individuals holding interim roles – in England's top flight since it began thirty-four in the past.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is he was raised and developed his game not far from here, he understands this area," added Canoville.

"Whenever children observe someone like Liam in charge of their club, a person who looks like them, who's from their ends, from a family that champions equality… it is profound demonstrating the path is there.

"Indeed, it is a massive step for Chelsea, for the capital, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, provide him with the necessary tools, and allow him to do his work."

What Exactly Does the Numbers Indicate?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became Chelsea head coach back in the nineties thereby becoming the Premier League's first African heritage manager.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering English black boss in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the only other current Premier League boss of colour.

The scarcity of ethnic minority managers across English football corresponds with an absence of diversity at executive level.

According to a Black Footballers Partnership 2023's report, forty-three percent of Premier League footballers come from African or Caribbean heritage.

Yet, analysis by the equality organization revealed just 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership positions across most Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Regarding senior coaching positions, based on figures from eleven clubs, the figure is 2%.

Across all coaching roles – encompassing head coaches – from those same 11 clubs, the figure is just 5%.

"He's certainly made history by virtue of his appointment as a the Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we want to see more of that," stated Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists a wealth of ability present within ethnic minority communities... they desire a chance to demonstrate what they can do. It is imperative to persist in work hard to break those barriers once and for all."

Additionally, the new appointee will become the fourth full-time British head coaches currently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which trails the continent's remaining major divisions regarding homegrown managers.

16 out of twenty top-flight managers in Italy are Italian, Eleven of the 20 are Spanish, Twelve of the 18 in Germany and 10 in Ligue 1 are French.

Current Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt all aspiring British coaches from an academy background are, in some way regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It is truly motivating for young English coaches in the system to see someone get such a role with that profile and everyone hopes he does highly successful."

It is vital to remember – he's there due to ability'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with the likes of Fulham, the Hammers as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his managerial career peaked with a five-month spell at then-League One side Brentford FC back in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the Honours List for services rendered to tackling discrimination in football and wider society.

After Liam retired from playing he followed his father's footsteps. He started penning articles for The Guardian, and in one piece he acknowledged the lack of diversity of black coaches. He pointed out that ethnicity does not determine ability arguing that opportunities should be given on merit.

He further expressed a point he has often stated: that significant lack of diversity results in misunderstandings of players from different ethnic and cultural heritage.

In a podcast for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" and "passionate", but said he understood the Dutch player with Nigerian parentage. Emegha is set to join him in moving from France to West London in July.

In subsequent newspaper articles, he also confessed to being "embarrassed" to hear an unnamed coach utter a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the Premier League's inclusion initiative and wrote an open letter to the former US President while he was in office, condemning his "overt" racism.

Rosenior has since built his reputation in the dugout – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week he was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their collaboration at Derby County.

The manager bid his farewells to his former club on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term deal with the Blues.

Chelsea boasted the Premier League's first black boss in Gullit as well as the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
