French authorities to begin intercepting small boats in Channel after UK pressure
France has agreed to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, following months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.
French police have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police representative states personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Significantly, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had previously been suggested as a possible method to disable the engines of the boats.
This determination to take action at all is a significant step forward, coming after a brief shift towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous government official departed from government.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and President, when French police were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of northern France, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be looking for methods to adjust to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
