Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The true challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
